Since 1984, the Infirmary Foundation has given more than $22 million back to the community. Founded to raise funds for new equipment, programs and service lines at Mobile Infirmary and the J.L. Bedsole/Rotary Rehabilitation Hospital, the success of the Infirmary Foundation’s fundraising efforts keeps these facilities as the region’s leader in technology and innovative health care.
In addition, the foundation provides scholarships for area nursing students and continuing education for health care professionals. The single largest philanthropic project to date is funding, along with the DeBakey Foundation, of the world-class My BodyWorks Health Gallery at Gulf Coast Exploreum.
Also in partnership with the DeBakey Foundation, the Infirmary Foundation launched a drug education program in 1994. A mobile, state-of-the-art DeBakey Drug Education Program travels to both public and private schools throughout five counties in southwest Alabama to provide fifth-grade students with information about the dangers of drug use and abuse.
The Infirmary Foundation Golf Tournament, held annually in October, offers a prime opportunity to raise funds for the organization. However, the majority of the foundation’s assets are donated in the form of memorials, honorariums and other special gifts.
