Stroke affects nearly 500,000 people each year and is considered the third major cause of death in the United States. Mobile Infirmary’s Stroke Center offers a revolutionary treatment that can actually reverse effects of a stroke.
Anti-clotting medicines given within a short period of time after the onset of an ischemic stroke may stop the stroke's progress and actually reverse some of its damage.
Mobile Infirmary is the only hospital in the region to offer several new techniques of stroke treatment. For some patients, a tiny tube can be inserted into the blood vessel inside the brain to dissolve larger blood clots. For other patients, a balloon can be inserted to open blockages that can cause strokes.
The key to this drug therapy is seeking immediate medical treatment; therefore knowing the warning signs of a stroke are critical.
The following can occur on one or both sides of the face, arm, legs or body. Seek help immediately if you or someone around you experiences sudden:
- Numbness or tingling.
- Loss of speech.
- Dizziness or unsteadiness.
- Loss of consciousness.
- Weakness or paralysis.
- Vision problems.
- Severe and unexplained headaches.
Mobile Infirmary has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for certification as a Primary Stroke Center. Learn more.
